Learning Goals for Second Grade (End of Year Expectations)
Students will:
- Ask questions and seek to learn more about the world around them.
- Socialize and collaborate with peers and teachers and improve communication skills.
- Improve handwriting skills and begin learning cursive handwriting formation.
- Increase understanding of phonetic patterns and spelling patterns in words.
- Demonstrate fluent oral reading, using sight words and decoding skills as appropriate for text and use context clues to determine word meaning of vocabulary.
- Comprehend varying texts by applying reading skills and strategies.
- Generate ideas for writing to include a personal narrative, creative writing, friendly letters, persuasive writing, fairy tales, poetry, and research writing.
- Improve grammar and writing conventions in sentence structure.
- Master addition and subtraction math fact fluency
- Use place value concepts up to 4-digit numerals.
- Count money and make change using coins and dollar bills.
- Solve 2-digit addition and subtraction problems with and without regrouping.
- Identify and use standard units of measurement and tell time to the nearest minute interval.
- Identify three-dimensional objects and understand fraction amounts.
- Plot data in charts, picture graphs, and bar graphs.
- Complete multiplication and division fact families.
- Use inquiry in science lessons and labs to make predictions and patterns in nature and learn about Earth and its natural resources.
- Learn about communities and demonstrate character traits to build a growth mindset.

What does my child need to start?
