SIXTH GRADE LEARNING GOALS

In Sixth Grade, students take important steps toward independence and leadership while strengthening advanced academic skills. Students continue to ask meaningful questions, collaborate with peers and teachers, and communicate effectively while developing responsibility and respect within the school community. Literacy instruction deepens as students use spelling rules, affixes, and root words to determine the meaning of new vocabulary and spell accurately using memorization and appropriate tools. Writing becomes more formal as students apply advanced grammar rules and compose argumentative, informative, explanatory, and narrative texts for specific topics and audiences. Students engage in novel and author studies throughout the year, analyzing and interpreting both literary and informational texts across genres.

In math, students explore data analysis, variables, formulas, decimals, rational numbers, geometry, number systems, algebraic thinking, probability, rates, ratios, and discrete mathematics. Science instruction emphasizes inquiry, experimentation, and critical thinking as students apply the scientific process to hands‑on investigations and projects. Cross‑curricular learning is strengthened through STEAM experiences that allow students to apply knowledge across subjects. Social studies focuses on world geography, governments, history, and economics, preparing students to understand global systems and perspectives. By the end of the year, students are well prepared for the academic and personal responsibilities of middle school.

LEADERSHIP, EXPLORATION, AND FUN IN SIXTH GRADE

Sixth Grade at Hale Keiki offers engaging learning experiences that balance academic challenge with creativity and connection. Students enjoy weekly enrichment classes—including art, music, physical education, and library—along with two daily recesses that support movement and wellness. Highlights include hands‑on learning with manipulatives and tools, STEAM and project‑based learning, novel and author studies, and Reading Buddies with a younger classroom. Students participate in field trips, including an outer island experience, and take part in meaningful traditions such as Lei Day Royal Court and performances. Leadership opportunities expand through Student Council roles and Passion Project Expo presentations. The year concludes with joyful celebrations, including the Talent Show and Spelling Bee, that showcase student growth, confidence, and accomplishment.
