FOURTH GRADE
LEARNING GOALS
In Fourth Grade, students continue to grow as thoughtful, responsible learners while deepening academic skills across disciplines. Children strengthen communication and collaboration skills as they work with peers and teachers, ask meaningful questions, and engage respectfully in classroom discussions. Literacy instruction follows a clear scope and sequence, guiding students in learning spelling rules, understanding word meanings, and breaking down words through the study of prefixes, suffixes, and root bases. Students participate in multiple novel studies throughout the year, analyzing and interpreting literary and informational texts from a variety of genres. Writing instruction focuses on narrative, opinion/persuasive, and informational writing, with students fully engaging in the writing process—brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing polished pieces.
In math, students build strong problem‑solving skills while working with place value, multi‑digit multiplication and division, geometry, fractions and decimals, mixed numbers, measurement, angles, and fraction operations, including multiplying fractions by whole numbers. Science learning emphasizes investigation, experimentation, and critical thinking as students explore the world around them like scientists. In social studies, students study Hawaiian history and geography, building cultural understanding and connection to place.
LEARNING, EXPLORATION, AND FUN IN FOURTH GRADE
Fourth Grade at Hale Keiki balances academic challenge with enriching, hands‑on experiences. Students enjoy weekly enrichment classes—including art, music, physical education, library, and guidance—along with two daily recesses that support movement and wellness. Highlights of the year include field trips, featuring an overnight on‑island experience, weekly science activities, novel studies, STEAM and project‑based learning, and the Hawaiian Animal Research Project. Students continue to build leadership and connection through Reading Buddies, Principal Time, and meaningful classroom activities. Schoolwide traditions such as the Halloween Celebration, Thanksgiving Feast, winter and spring programs, and parent involvement events foster a strong sense of community. The year concludes with joyful end‑of‑year celebrations, including the Talent Show and Spelling Bee, that showcase student growth and confidence.
