FIFTH GRADE
Age 10 by September 30 or successful completion of Fourth Grade

FIFTH GRADE LEARNING GOALS
In Fifth Grade, students grow as confident leaders, critical thinkers, and independent learners as they prepare for upper school academics. Children continue to ask questions, collaborate with peers and teachers, and develop strong communication skills while learning to be responsible, respectful members of the school community. Literacy instruction follows a clear scope and sequence that strengthens spelling rules, word meanings, and vocabulary development through the study of affixes and root words. Students engage in novel and author studies, analyzing and interpreting both literary and informational texts across genres. Writing instruction focuses on narrative, opinion/persuasive, and informational writing, with students fully utilizing the writing process—brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing polished work.
In math, students deepen conceptual understanding and problem‑solving skills as they study whole‑number operations, place value, fractions and decimals, area and volume, coordinate grids, measurement, and decimal multiplication and division. Science instruction emphasizes investigation, problem‑solving, and critical thinking through the scientific process, while students apply cross‑curricular knowledge in meaningful STEAM projects. Social studies centers on United States history and geography, helping students understand the nation’s development, regions, and role in the world.
LEADERSHIP, EXPLORATION, AND FUN IN FIFTH GRADE
Fifth Grade at Hale Keiki offers engaging experiences that challenge students academically while creating lasting memories. Students participate in weekly enrichment classes—including art, music, physical education, library, and guidance—along with two daily recesses to support balance and wellness. Highlights include hands‑on learning with manipulatives and tools, STEAM and project‑based learning, novel and author studies, Reading Buddies with a younger classroom, and special opportunities such as Principal Time. Students take part in meaningful field trips, including a multi‑night, service‑based outer island experience, as well as traditions like Lei Day Royal Court, Market Day, and the End‑of‑Year Research Expo. Schoolwide celebrations—such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, and holiday programs—build community, while end‑of‑year events like the Talent Show and Spelling Bee celebrate student growth, confidence, and achievement.
