SECOND GRADE
LEARNING GOALS
In Second Grade, students grow as independent thinkers while strengthening academic skills across all subject areas. Children build communication and collaboration skills through discussion, teamwork, and problem‑solving, while continuing to ask questions and explore the world around them. Literacy instruction deepens as students improve handwriting skills, begin learning cursive letter formation, and expand their understanding of phonetic and spelling patterns. Students read fluently using sight words, decoding strategies, and context clues to comprehend a variety of texts. Writing instruction encourages creativity and structure through personal narratives, friendly letters, persuasive writing, fairy tales, poetry, and research projects, with a strong focus on grammar, sentence structure, and conventions. In math, students master addition and subtraction facts, solve multi‑digit problems with and without regrouping, explore place value up to four‑digit numbers, complete multiplication and division fact families, and apply skills to real‑world concepts such as money, time, measurement, fractions, and data representation. Through inquiry‑based science and social studies, students investigate patterns in nature, learn about Earth and its resources, and explore communities while developing character traits and a growth mindset.
LEARNING, EXPLORATION, AND FUN IN SECOND GRADE
Second Grade combines rigorous academics with memorable, engaging experiences that inspire a love of learning. Students participate in hands‑on science experiments, multisensory activities, and interactive lessons that bring concepts to life. Weekly enrichment classes—including art, music, physical education, and library—support creativity, coordination, and curiosity, while two daily recesses allow for play and movement. Special highlights include Second Grade Camp, field trips, Fairy Tale Writing Day, Poetry Slam, and the Animal Research Expo. Students also enjoy Reading Buddies, Principal Time, and schoolwide traditions such as the Halloween Celebration, Thanksgiving Feast, winter and spring programs, and parent involvement events. The year concludes with joyful end‑of‑year celebrations, including the Talent Show and Spelling Bee, that showcase student growth and confidence.
