KINDERGARTEN
LEARNING GOALS

In Kindergarten, students strengthen foundational academic skills while growing as confident, independent learners. Through direct phonics instruction, children learn to read by sounding out words, recognize all letter sounds, understand long and short vowel patterns, and spell simple words using consonant‑vowel‑consonant and silent‑e patterns. Students develop strong writing skills by forming all uppercase and lowercase letters correctly, writing simple sentences independently, and writing both their first and last names. Math instruction includes counting and recognizing numbers up to 100, solving addition and subtraction problems using manipulatives and counting strategies, and building number sense through hands‑on activities. Kindergarteners also grow socially and emotionally by completing multi‑step tasks, following classroom routines, taking on classroom jobs, and developing empathy and cooperation. Science exploration, questioning, creativity, and continued fine and gross motor development are woven throughout the day.

LEARNING, EXPLORATION, AND FUN IN KINDERGARTEN

Kindergarten at Hale Keiki is filled with engaging experiences that bring learning to life. Students enjoy hands‑on science, multisensory activities, imagination‑building materials, and daily group activities such as storytime and collaborative learning. Weekly enrichment classes—including art, music, physical education, and library—support creativity, coordination, and a lifelong love of learning, while students enjoy recess twice a day on our own playground. Children participate in Reading Buddies and mentorship programs with older students, special opportunities like Principal Time, and cherished traditions such as the ABC Fashion Show, origami projects, show‑and‑tell, and the introduction to chapter books. Throughout the year, students experience field trips, schoolwide celebrations including Halloween and a Thanksgiving Feast, winter and spring performances, parent involvement events, and joyful end‑of‑year celebrations that build community and lasting memories.

GETTING READY FOR KINDERGARTEN

To begin Kindergarten, students should arrive with a backpack and reusable water bottle, all clearly labeled with their name, along with a change of clothes kept at school. Students should also bring a lunch each day, which may be packed from home or provided through our school lunch vendor. All classroom and school supplies are provided by Hale Keiki School.

KINDERGARTEN READINESS SKILLS

Incoming Kindergarten students should be able to recognize their own name, count to at least 10, use the restroom independently, and demonstrate a growing interest in letters, numbers, and books. Children should also show the ability and willingness to listen to and follow simple directions, participate in group settings, and approach learning with curiosity and enthusiasm.
