Hale Keiki School is comprised, on average, of a student population of 95% military dependents. These children represent parents from every branch of service, including reservists and DOD employees, as well as the local civilian population.
Our students face separation from loved ones due to deployments and other calls to duty by the military. These children are brave, thoughtful, kind, and generous. Each morning the words echo in the courtyard, "We are respectful, responsible, ready, and safe. We are also sharing, caring, helpful, and kind."
Above all, a Hale Keiki student is proud to stand each morning with a hand over their heart to recite the Pledge of Allegiance and sing the National Anthem with stillness and respect that comes from knowing the sacrifice their family makes to protect our country and freedoms.
In accordance with our philosophy and mission statement, we encourage our students, parents, and staff to give back to our community. Hale Keiki School holds several annual collection drives to support military families and local organizations, including the Tripler Army Medical Center Fisher House and the Hawai'i Food Bank.
Corresponding with the 100th Day of School Celebration, each year, the NHKS PTO organizes a collection of donations to the Tripler Army Medical Center Fisher House. The Fisher House Drive has been an annual NHKS tradition for 10 years, and has provided thousands of household goods to families of patients awaiting care at Tripler Army Medical Center.
In 2012, NHKS became one of the largest annual donors to TAMC Fisher House, collecting over 1,000 items to donate.
Each November, first graders donate their annual Thanksgiving Play proceeds to Hawai'i Meals on Wheels.
The NHKS Student Council organizes an annual drive to the Hawai'i Food Bank. Elected student officials in grades first through fourth collect hundreds of canned goods and nonperishable food items and deliver them to the Hawai'i Food Bank.
Each spring, the NHKS Young Patriots Club selects a special someone who possesses the "Heart of a Hero." The recipient of this award honors someone who exemplifies military service, patriotism, and community involvement.
